Thursday, September 14, False Albacore on Topwater Mark Alpert and I went out yesterday to give his boat the first albie stink of the year. We found fish easily and quickly, but for the longest time they were playing hard to get. We got cast after cast right into the blitzes but the fish just weren’t taking what we were giving them. Eventually Mark did get one, but it seemed more or less random. These fish very clearly weren’t liking what we were giving them. This fish gave Mark a really odd fight. Initially it was pretty much business as usual, but once he got it to the boat it just refused to come to the surface. It stayed about 15 feet below us going in circles for the longest time.

There are no truths when it comes to figuring out false albacore. More than any other gamefish in the Northeast, albies display a cohesive attitude when they school up and feed. Occasionally, the stars align and albies let their collective guard down, striking a range of lures with abandon, and every fisherman in on the action will have multiple hookups. Usually, they live up to their reputation as picky, keen-eyed lure snobs, boiling on bait but ignoring artificials.
At these times, there might be only one tactic, lure or style of presentation that is the key to unlocking their jaws. In a fleet of boats chasing albies, the few anglers who have figured them out will far outfish the rest.

Jeff Fortin left and Brad Murphy lift the Boat fishermen in Buzzards Bay have been pulling the occasional to pound fish out of large schools of 24 to 36 inch bass. He asked Fortin if he should follow the fish, but Fortin declined, not fully knowing the size of the fish he was attached to. Fortin was fighting the fish on a size Shimano Saragosa spooled with pound test braided line attached to a pound-test leader with a uni-to-uni knot. With the real possibility of being spooled or having the fish break the leader, Gould maneuvered the boat as it ran underneath another boat.
Weeds covered the bass when it first came into view next to the boat, making it difficult to determine its full size.

Reaching the water just as the sun was rising, the morning air was very fresh. And to our disappointment the river was considerably high and after a quick test with my hand very cold even compared with the cold morning air. The high and cold water was proving to have its effects on the fish with the first hour and a half only seeing one boil rise from beneath my lure.

Fishing Cape Cod blog February 1, There is no shortage of effective lures on the market, with hundreds of different lures and color combinations to choose from. However if you are just starting out, I think it is a good idea to keep things as simple as humanly possible. In other words, if you are new to the Canal, avoid bouncing jigs and bait along the bottom. You will only make life more frustrating for yourself.
Instead, focus on fishing the surface and mid-water column — at least when you are just starting out.
Cod fishing is still tops in the Jersey realm, as the party boats running out of Brielle are experiencing some serious bottomfishing on the midshore Garden State wrecks. The Big Jamaica, Brielle, had a solid trip on Sunday as 45 to 50 keeper cod hit the decks.
These shiny chunks of chrome-plated metal have been around for decades, yet still catch fish all kinds. I have taken almost every imaginable Northeast inshore species on diamond jigs, including sea bass, fluke, striped bass, false albacore, bonito, bluefish, scup, cod, and even tautog. When the surface action dies, I often send down a diamond and see what I can dredge up. More often than not, I manage to score something. One summer I found myself trapped in a fog bank off Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts.
Fortunately, the seas were calm and I was content to sit tight until the fog lifted. To kill some time, I decided to do a little jigging over the rocky bottom below. In less than an hour I had jigged up 2 keeper fluke and a sea bass, along with an assortment of smaller fish, including scup, cunner and searobins. No a bad haul, and I even brought home dinner!
Diamond jigs are so effective partly because they imitate a variety of baitfish, from squid to herring. You can find diamond jigs in different sizes and adorned with everything from bucktail to rubber tube tails. While the latter work well in certain situations, such as when small sand eels are prevalent, a plain jig rigged with a single hook usually does the job nicely. Most diamond jigs come rigged with a treble hook. I remove the treble and replace it with a single Siwash hook, which results in better hook-sets and also makes it easier to release undersized fish.

New design emphasizes catching, not keeping. By Jerry Gibbs posted Sep 18th, at Since then I’ve used them extensively with plastic and natural baits and on flies. I’ve also had great input from fishing pals like Captain Jim Ellis and other anglers on their success with the hooks. The real kicker is that circle hooks are taking fish in situations where we didn’t believe the design would work.
And they are saving fish not destined for the table. Because the hooks are not taken deeply and because they are removed so quickly. In California, a survival improvement of 50 percent for chinook salmon was reported when circle hooks were used.

Jul 13, · On Cape Cod Bay in particular, live eels account for many big striped bass each spring, summer and fall. Live eels can be used to fish for bass in deep water. They can help you to catch larger fish, as the biggest striper fish tend to lurk near the bottom.

I do this to show you folks that there are huge variances in the size and velocity of tides we experience in any given month. In addition to that, at least a couple times in a season we have unusual and extremes of these variances. One can always see these variances by obtaining a tide chart that shows both the times of the high and low tides as well as the height in feet and tenths of both high and low tides.
Last year we experienced for the first time, shoaling on the Chatham outer bar, which restricted the deeper draft vessels from coming and going at any time of day. On the days of an extreme tide, the amount of water under your vessel can be much less than anticipated, so its a good idea to know how to figure the tide, by looking at a tide chart as I mention above. My vessel was only able to transit the bar at one hour before low and two hours after low tide.
